Claud Austin McKay enlisted with the 5th Reinforcements 35th Battalion on the 21st of July 1916 and left Sydney on board HMAT A11 "Ascanius" on the 25th of October 1916 and returned to Australia on the 12th of June 1919.

8th April 1918,

Informant; Private: 2633 Claude Austin McKay. 35th BN. Private: 2530 Cecil William BUCKLEY. A Coy, No:1 Platoon, 35th BN. At PASSCHENDAELE, Oct 12th/17. Just after we had started on a retreat of 200 yards, a shell hit BUCKLEY, killing him right out. I was 7 or 8 yards from him at the time. BUCKLEY belonged to A coy, No: 1 Platoon and was acting Platoon Quartermaster at the time. He was known as "Buck".

Family Information

Claud was a single 24 year old labourer from East Kempsey upon enlistment. His father lived at Washington Street, East kempsey, N.S.W.
