Born: 1887. Blandford, New South Wales, Australia. Birth Cert:24784/1887.

Died: 29th May 1917. Killed in Action Dead Horse Corner. Belgium.


Father: John Baptist Idstein. (1838-13/06/1892) Died Murrurundi, N.S.W. Death Cert:8707/1892.

Mother: Barbara Mary Idstein. nee: Hefner. (1849-1928) Died Auburn, N.S.W. Death Cert:11333/1928.


INFORMATION

Valentine Frederick Idstein embarked from Sydney onboard HMAT A "Anchises" on the 24th of August 1916 and disembarked at Devonport England on the 11th of October 1916 where the Battalion was entrained to the Durrington Army Camp at Larkhill.Here the Battalion settled down to hard training, which included Route Marching, Trench Digging, Bomb Practice, Musketry and General Camp Routine with the 9th Training Battalion. On the 11th November Val was allocated to "A" Company No:11 Platoon before entrained at Amesbury for Southampton, embarking on the S.S "Arundel". The transport section left by S.S. "Princess Victoria". The Battalion arrived at Le Harve, France on the 22nd November 1916.

29th May 1917.

35th Battalion relieved the 34th Battalion in Front Line as per Brigade Orders No:64. Latter moved to "B" Battalion bivouac in Wood. During night four patrols worked Brigade front. Some gas lying by dugouts across NO MANS LAND. Our patrol forced to retire due to hostile rifle fire.

Valentine was Killed in Action at Dead Horse Corner at Ploegsteert, Belgium and is remembered with honour and is commemerated in perpetuity by the Commonweath War Graves Commission at the Strand Military Cemetery, Comines-Warnetonhainaut, Belgium.

Informant; Lance Corporal: 2075 Alec John H GARDINER. Private: 2173 Valentine Frederick IDSTEIN was killed by one of our own gas shells. It hit him in the chest and he died instantly. My pal Private: Frederick SALTAN, stretcher bearer carried him out and he told me all about it. INDSTEIN is buried in a new cemetery we were making at Plaegsleert where it happened. It was evening.

Informant; Sergeant: 138 Alphonsus Bernard LAVELLE A Company No: 4 Platoon. I saw Private: 2173 Valentine Frederick IDSTEIN'S body carried back. He had been struck by one of our own Gas Shells on 29th May 1917 at about 8:00pm. He was in the L.G.S. and was on observation duty at the time. Before he was killed he was gassed by other gas shells falling short. I attended his funeral the next dat at Ploegsteert Cemetery near the Dressing Station.

Tall, Slim, Fairish. Well liked by all his mates. One of the finest chaps I ever had to deal with. A good looking chap.

Informant; Sergeant: 430 Arthur James FRANCIS "B" Company No: 7 Platoon. I saw Private: 2173 Valentine Frederick IDSTEIN. after he was killed. He was attached to Lewis Gun Team of which I was in charge. It was at Ploegsteert May 29/17, St Ives Trenches. I believe he was buried close by.

Valentine was a single 29 year old Dairy Farmer from Blandford, N.S.W. upon enlistment his parents lived at Adelaide Street, Murrundi, N.S.W.
