Born: 1885. Bombala, New South Wales, Australia. Birth Cert:25794/1885

Died: 12th of October 1917. Killed in Action Passchendaele Ridge, Belgium.


Father: Isaac Charles Hammond.

Mother: Susan Jane Hammond. nee: Tyler.


INFORMATION

George Hammond enlisted with the 3rd reinforcements 35th Battalion on the 11th of April 1916 at Cathcart NSW. George proceeded to camp at Goulburn and then to Liverpool NSW. He embarked from Sydney for the United Kingdom aboard HMAT A68 "Anchises" on the 24th of August 1916. George disembarked with the Battalion at Davenport England on the 11th of October 1916 and went into camp at Salisbury Plains. During operations in France and Flanders George was Wounded in Action with shrapnel to his left eyebrow on the 10th of June 1917 and sent to hospital for treatment. George returned to his unit on the 7th of July 1917 and was Killed in Action at Passchendaele Ridge aged 33 years and 6 months.

George has no known grave and is commemerated at Ypres, Menin Gate Memorial Belgium. George was a labourer from Cathcart in New South Wales, he was a trainee butcher and farmer prior the the Great War, and went to school at Cathcart. He lived in Strezlecki Victoria from 1905 to 1915. George was a member of the Chuch of England, he was over 6 feet tall, 160 pounds and of fair complexion with grey eyes and brown hair.

His British War Medal:46484 and Victory Medal:45948 to PTE 2085 G HAMMOND 35BN AIF were acquired in November 2004 from Western Australia and are in the collection.

Isaac Charles Hammond died in 1934 at Parramatta, N.S.W. Death Cert:10376 and Susan Jane Hammond died in 1942 at Granville, N.S.W. Death Cert:17940/1942.
